A new trend has good students cheating on exams and parents are supporting it. A high-tech camera system along with good intentions is being used by students globally, to get help with hard to pass exams.
Good education has always been measured by student performance and no better place to illustrate the value of higher education than in college and universities in the United States. Historically, investing in education has demonstrated to be worthwhile and universities have managed to offer adequate teachers that spark interest, innovation, and a love for learning. That was mostly true until 2020.
With a pandemic present, education took a back seat and students were left to their own devices to excel or fail. Not only was there pressure on students that wanted to advance, to do it on their own; but something else was also happening too. Teachers became lazy and many did not know how to teach remotely.
Fast forward to 2023. Things have not changed much in three years. While many teachers are doing a fantastic job and do what they are meant to do, many are still on lazy mode or are hindered by the bureaucracies of the education system that rewards mediocrity and lowers the standards of teaching in exchange for teacher compensation. This is seen at all levels, starting with Pre-K and it does not end after high school.
So, what is the trend you ask? It is quite clever. Students use a streaming hidden camera and an earpiece that allows them to show live video of their test or screen to someone located remotely. They can then communicate using a nearly invisible earpiece with that person via a simple phone call and this way, a helper is enlisted to read questions and research answers in real time.
We asked some students why don’t they just study? Many of them have taken the same tests several times and failed irrespective of their diligent studying. They are convinced that that some teachers make tests extremely hard, and many times include material not covered in class, so students inevitably fail and must pay for the class again. The college benefits with additional revenue, the teacher ensures a continued job and the student’s parents bear the financial burden.
Why cheating is not something we support, the feedback indicates students don’t want to cheat. They want to be taught and they want to excel. Now educational curriculum reform is a whole other topic which we will not cover in this article. What do you think?
